Sleater-Kinney’s Electric Feminism Cover

Abstract

This article argues that Sleater-Kinney is a transformative band in rock history, fundamentally revitalizing the artform across a three-decade career. Through an analysis of the band's background in the world of independent labels, punk rock, and the Riot Grrrl movement, the article charts the evolution of Sleater-Kinney, paying particular attention to their lyrics, as well as to the ongoing relationship with their fans. Providing both a historical and a theoretical perspective to contextualize the band's music, the article's central thesis is that Sleater-Kinney has cultivated a unique aesthetic capable of conveying its own form of feminism, one that is characterized by a trenchant critique of American neoliberal culture.
