Analyzing How the Concept of Nemo Resideo in the Military Translates to Student Veteran Peer Support in Higher Education

This study aimed to examine how the ethos of Nemo Resideo or ‘Leave No One Behind’ in the military translates to student veterans’ peer support experiences within higher education institutions. Interviews were conducted with 10 undergraduate student veterans. Student veterans strongly emphasized the transferability of Nemo Resideo from the military to higher education environments. The research findings provided insight into how the ethos is operationalized within the collegiate environment, including student veterans making learning and resolving problems a team sport, motivating and competing with each other, and fostering a sense of belonging among student veterans. The study also highlighted student veterans’ recommendations for higher education institutions to strengthen Nemo Resideo’s ethos within higher education environments, including veteran study groups and peer support, centralized veteran student services, and providing opportunities for continuous service.
