Abstract

In 2018, the name Mohamed appeared among the top 20 most popular forenames given in France. This unprecedented event triggered a polemic along the lines of: Is Mohamed a French name? The present study returns to this polemic, taking account of the inferences and their role in the sequence of the discourse’s argument and the construction of extra-discursive representations. The analyses will attempt to show that the role of the implicit is not simply to provide the background informational context against which the assertion is developed, but that the implicit itself becomes the element of propositional content on which the discursive sequencing is focused and the argumentation is built. The study also aims to support the theory according to which the contours between different forms of the implicit (particularly presuppositions and hidden meanings) are badly marked out and that, far from being independent of one another, these implicits are often enmeshed in the same utterance.
