
Artificial Intelligence in Global Health Through a Christian Lens
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming global health by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, epidemic surveillance, education, and resource allocation. While promising in its potential to improve efficiency and expand access, AI also raises pressing concerns around equity, bias, surveillance, and the commodification of health data. Situated at the intersection of health, technology, and ethics, this commentary argues that Christian theological principles of stewardship, justice, and the imago Dei provide a vital framework for guiding AI adoption in global health. The analysis first shows how AI can serve under resourced communities through scalable diagnostics and early warning systems, while acknowledging its potential to widen health disparities when deployed without equity. Drawing on real world examples such as biased skin tone diagnostics and exclusionary datasets, it surfaces critical inequities amplified by AI. It then proposes a Christian ethical framework that welcomes innovation but insists on transparency, inclusivity, and dignity as guiding norms. Finally, it outlines practical recommendations for policymakers, faith based health organizations, educators, and churches, urging prioritization of health outcomes rooted in justice and compassion. This faith informed analysis calls the global church to act as a prophetic voice so that AI becomes an instrument of healing and solidarity rather than exclusion and harm.
