
Frugal Surgical Innovations for a Greener Global Health Landscape
Abstract
This field report details a training initiative using Frugal Innovative Surgical Procedures to enhance surgical access and environmental sustainability in resource-limited settings. The two key innovations are Gas Insufflation Less Laparoscopic Surgeries (GILLS) and a Laptop Cystoscope.
GILLS replaces traditional carbon di oxide insufflation with a mechanical lift, eliminating the need for expensive gases and specialized equipment. This allows procedures to be performed under spinal anaesthesia, reducing resource consumption and the need for a general anaesthesia team. The highly portable Laptop Cystoscope provides comparable imaging quality to energy-intensive conventional systems for minor Minimally Invasive procedures.
Results show a 20% increase in surgical volume at empowered local hospitals. A carbon footprint analysis demonstrated a remarkable total saving of 4250 kg carbon di oxide, resulting in a net saving of 3800 kg per intervention cycle. Additionally, the shorter hospital stays afforded by this MIS technology saves 180kg carbon di oxide per procedure compared to open surgery.
The initiative proves that frugal innovation is a powerful, dual-benefit strategy, successfully aligning increased surgical access with the principles of green surgery and strengthening local healthcare systems.
