Abstract

IndyCar racing is designed to demonstrate driver skill, and overall ability by including both oval track races and road/ street track races in a single season schedule. Each track type requires different strategies, car setups, and modification of driving technique. IndyCar racecars are fast and notoriously challenging to drive due to IndyCar racecars lacking traction control, ABS, or power steering. Furthermore, IndyCar provides each team with an identical chassis, highlighting the importance of driver skill rather than machinery required to win races. Since IndyCar has many factors designed to increase the difficulty of winning races, combined with unique challenges exclusive to IndyCar, there is a significant learning curve for rookie drivers. Utilizing data from IndyCar drivers who competed in at least 5 consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2024, we analyze individual race finishes through regression analysis. Our results aim to quantify the relationship between driver experience and performance to contribute further understanding of success in IndyCar.
