Abstract

This paper is about two of the institutions that United States citizens consider to be the most accustomed to, these are educational institutions and religious institutions. Religious institutions provide society with a level of cohesion, and educational institutions arguably function to inform citizens in various subjects for socially beneficial decision making. Both are significant, and the dynamic between the two is worth analyzing. With respect to religious institutions we will focus on how frequently people attend religious services of any tradition or denomination. Education should also be addressed more generally, and without reference to specific professions and fields of study. What must be determined first is which variable is independent and which variable is dependent. Does the frequency of religious service attendance cause effects on levels of education, or does the level of education cause effects on the frequency of religious service attendance? After this has been explored, the next question would be, is this a positive or negative correlation? This is important because of its implications in encouraging higher education in whatever way may be most effective. To be well educated is a rational advantage in the culture of the United States, likely resulting in quantifiable benefits including greater wealth, and if there is a relationship between education and religious service attendance, this will imply a corresponding statement about religious service attendance. However, with such statistical analysis, the question of whether it would be beneficial in some ways, in this case regarding education and perhaps income, to attend or not attend religious services, could be answered.
