Publication history

The history of scientific oceanographic publishing at the University of Gdańsk dates back to 1971, when the Scientific Journals of the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the University of Gdańsk were launched. They were published in three series: geographical, biological, and oceanographic. Professor Jerzy Szukalski was the Chairman of the Editorial Committee. The first issue of the "Oceanography" series was published in 1973. Its scientific editor was Professor Walerian Cięglewicz. The purpose of the journals, defined by the then-director of the Institute of Oceanography, Professor Władysław Mańkowski, was to communicate scientific achievements in the broadly understood aspects of biology, physics, chemistry and marine geology, as well as marine meteorology and climatology. The journal's publication frequency was flexible. Between 1973 and 1994, 13 volumes were published. From the third issue, Professor Krystyna Wiktor became the journal's Editor-in-Chief. In 1996, the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk became co-publisher of the single-topic periodical Studia i Materiał Oceanologiczne (Oceanological Studies and Materials), which had been published irregularly since 1971 as a conference journal of the Committee on Marine Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The journal then changed its name to Oceanological Studies and began publishing in English. Professor Krzysztof Korzeniewski became its Editor-in-Chief. In 1999, Professor Halina Piekarek-Jankowska took over this position. Since 2002, the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk (now the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography) has been the sole publisher of the journal. Professor Marcin Pliński became Editor-in-Chief, and Grzegorz Kozłowski, M.A., became Technical Editor. The journal was renamed Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies, which remains in effect today. Expanding its scope to encompass all aspects of hydrology, both marine and freshwater, has expanded the journal's readership and contributor base. In 2005, Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies was included on the Journal Citation Reports (Philadelphia list). In 2023, Professor Waldemar Surosz assumed the position of Editor-in-Chief, and from November 2025, Professor Anita Lewandowska has held the position. As of December 2025, a total of 54 issues of Oceanological and Hydrobiological Studies have been published, four each year.
