mobi.mapr: Measuring and improving mobility accessibility and quality
Abstract
Extended abstract 6-036-26
How good is everyday mobility for all, regardless their means of transport? The answer depends not only on the availability of options or proximity to a stop, but on how easily people can reach what matters to them. High-quality mobility means being able to get to desired activities (education, shopping, leisure activities, etc.), regardless of age, income, or where someone lives — in dense city centres, suburban neighbourhoods, or rural neighbourhoods.
A solution-oriented approach to mobility quality looks beyond infrastructure and timetables. It asks:
- How well do transport systems connect people with their daily destinations?
- Which groups benefit most, and which are left behind?
- Where do gaps in accessibility persist across regions and population groups?
To answer these questions, a data-driven assessment of accessibility including all modes of transportation helps identify where mobility systems already support everyday needs and where they can be improved. This approach integrates objective accessibility data (distances, travel times) with qualitative factors such as perceived safety, comfort, and environmental quality. The result is a nuanced understanding of how mobility feels and functions for different user groups.
By combining high-resolution spatial data with socio-demographic and infrastructural information, the analysis can:
- Highlight accessibility differences across regions, municipalities, and neighbourhoods.
- Compare how well local transport systems serve various population groups.
- Identify mobility bottlenecks and areas with untapped potential.
- Support inclusive and demand-oriented planning for new or improved mobility offers.
Such insights empower decision-makers, planners, and communities to set clear targets and goals. From adjusting service levels, to adding stops or improving infrastructure and coordinating land-use and transport planning, mobi.mapr as a tool gives the user all the information to make the most informed decisions.
