Introduction
This book discusses prominent issues in teaching online classroom, on how educators and students surviving and thriving in the new normal and how they face challenges in online learning and teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the closure of public and private schools and universities. As a result, physical teaching and learning has been replaced with online approach to deliver knowledge for facing the new normal. Doug Lemov pointed several issues in current situation online learning for examples student engagement, motivation, attentation, student performance, technical issues, time management, lack of interaction or student understanding in online learning. Educator need to immediately learn to a new method of instruction in online teaching such as Zoom and Google Meet for commonly platform nowadays.
Structure and Content
The book clearly describes the teaching techniques employed in online learning and consist seven chapter. Chapter 1 describes about synchronous and asynchronous learning, in general asynchronous learning and teaching that take place at different times and different places. Apart from that synchronous learning takes place at the same time but different places to make it easier for users to access learning through applications for example Zoom, Team, Google Meet and Google Classroom. There are several advantages in synchronous and asynchronous learning where it allows the learning and teaching process to be monitored from time to time. Such as learning and teaching recordings that have been recorded and this can make it easier for students to access using the recordings at any time.
Chapter 2 explains about dissolving the screen which is a method in online learning that maintains learning in the classroom to facilitate students to understand face-to-face learning and teaching. The challenge is when we have plentiful resources and documents to be shared. Apart from that, dissolve the screen also emphasizes body language, expression, tone and pitch of voice to pay attention in online learning in which student can give a feedback or reaction during teaching and learning process. In this chapter, its discussion between teachers and students regarding online learning environment also how to manage emotional and increase motivation student such as make your class more interactive and engagement, add quizzes in online lesson for helping students get motivated for the lesson well as can recapping what was covered in the previous class and teachers can access student work or activities from time to time.
Chapter 3 describes the culture of attention and involvement. it is an observation in the classroom where it requires the priority of observation and communication in online learning and teaching. In a passage by Daniel Willingham who explains the concept of learning and teaching through the process of memory and high -level thinking in solving problem. Apart from that, some approach which stated in long -term memory and working time memory to practiced how its building a strong culture of attention and engagement is especially critical in an online learning and how to maintain the level of thinking skill as long -term memory in terms of teaching concepts and technology is preferred such as materials used to attract students in learning and teaching online.
Chapter 4 explains the pause point in which self -learning and through observation using video. Apart from that online learning and teaching requires a correct technique for attracting students such as question and answer sessions with students and brick and mortar method in the classroom allows a student to be active in asynchronous learning and or synchronous learning. The teaching sessions using pause point will be one of interaction learning and teaching student and student not miss out the point during classes. this part also important in evaluating student ability during online class.
Chapter 5 describes the accountability loops and checking for understanding where an assessment of the way teachers teaches and the way of thinking in learning, how it learns based on the challenges in online learning and teaching process. We need to constantly know what students thinking or changes over the course of the lesson in the classroom or online learning and how we assess student understanding, focus, recognizing, monitoring for students to develop self-assessment skills. There are other methods used such as periodic assessment and teacher evaluating from question-and-answer sessions and this way is more to collect data and observations about learning and teaching for student understanding during online class.
Chapter 6 describes in a classroom setting that involves daily procedures and routines for learning and teaching which is a key in ensuring students focus and attention during learning and teaching sessions. Apart from that, the procedure practiced by Spanish teacher Knikki Hernandez by using slide materials and learning videos can help to ensure the flow of the class, Students’ readiness paying attention and students are actively involved in the learning session and consistency daily routine activities or task of class flows to help students are prepared, attentive, and actively engaged during online classes.
Chapter 7 explains about Classroom Tech with a variety of methods used to facilitate online learning and teaching firstly recording tools basic features such as chat, screen sharing, polling, and Breakout Rooms. Secondly remote teaching technology such as Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams to recording method for the main learning process where it will help students’ understanding of learning and teaching. There are some basic keys in successful recording such as the choice of background, dressing, lighting and background sound. Apart from that the breakout room method is part of a small group discussion in the classroom and is more engaging for students in learning. Finally, in chapter 7 involves three other methods to ensure students focus on online learning and teaching such as Shared Documents and Student Submission, Setting Up Your Space and Screen Sharing.
Overall Impression and Relevance to the Field of Online Education
Overall, this book describes the methods or concepts of online learning and teaching that apply distance learning that can be used such as synchronous learning or asynchronous learning that can help students and teachers who use the applied methods. The use of synchronous learning at the same time and different place for learning sessions and asynchronous learning at the different time and different place. Besides, online learning and teaching also allows students and teachers to use several applications such as Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams to start online classes to help the learning and teaching process run smoothly. The final word in this book discusses the methods and processes in online learning and teaching, how the methods to engage students in the classroom and the proper use of materials to make a big impact in terms of student assessment.
