Abstract
In the literature, it is generally asserted that diversity of performance increases with advancing age. Recent research by Hale, Myerson, Smith and Poon (1988), however, demonstrated that for reaction time measures, increasing diversity (SD) is a function of performance solely. The present meta-analytic research indicates that correlations between age and SD. with mean performance partialed out, are significant for STM span and for measures of episodic-memory. Thus, aging includes both an effect on the mean of memory performance and on the interindividual diversity in at least some aspects of memory performance.
