Abstract
[The Analysis of “Depth of Processing” in Memory-Research, Was it Deep Enough?]
An overview of the literature about the “Levels-of-Processing-framework” is presented. A number of critiques are formulated together with some described by others Three aspects of the framework and its empirical basis are scrutinized. First, beneath a lot of experiments in favor, most aspects of the framework are contradicted by some other data. Secondly, in order to enhance the fit of the framework, theoretical notions were introduced, overwhelming the student with a plethora of concepts. Finally, it was never studied, whether these additional concepts were not the elements of the still lacking definition of “depth of processing”.
