
A Complete Digital Concordance of Orsini’s Familiae Romanae (1577): 758 Coin Engravings Mapped to Modern Reference Systems
Abstract
This paper presents the first complete concordance of the 758 coin engravings in Fulvio Orsini’s Familiae Romanae (Rome, 1577), the foundational work of numismatic prosopography. 757 of the engravings are identified against modern reference systems; the remaining one reproduces a 16th-century fabrication with no ancient prototype. The concordance was built with a computational pipeline — image segmentation, linked-data legend matching against Coinage of the Roman Republic Online (CRRO) reference databases, multimodal verification against museum specimens, and human validation — with every description that was drafted using artificial intelligence checked against Orsini’s 1577 text. The dataset (JSON, a nomisma.org-aligned JSON-LD export, CSV, extracted images, specimen photographs, and a self-contained HTML viewer) is deposited on Zenodo under CC-BY 4.0. The project demonstrates that readily available tools can unlock systematic scholarly value from illustrated reference works cited for centuries but never decoded as data, provided their output is treated as a draft requiring substantial expert verification against the sources rather than a finished result.
