Emotion Vocabulary in Anatolian Languages: Etymology and Conceptual Structure

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative lexical dataset of emotional vocabulary for Anatolian languages. The resource contains 72 etymological entries and 150 language-specific derivational nests, organized in tabular form. Each row corresponds to a cognate set associated with a Proto-Anatolian and/or Proto-Indo-European reconstruction and indexed by lemma, while the language columns record the attested derivational material for that root in individual Anatolian languages. The dataset includes evidence from Hittite (65 entries), Luwian (44), Lycian A (11), Lycian B (7), Lydian (7), Palaic (12), and Carian (4). It was compiled through systematic corpus-based analysis drawing on the eDiAna corpus and the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, covering 4,171 lexical items from the non-Hittite Anatolian languages and more than 25,000 Hittite word forms. The dataset is designed for reuse in historical semantics, emotion lexicon research, Anatolian philology, and Indo-European comparative linguistics.
