Modernism’s Vector: Dataset for a Chinese-Language Journal in Late 1950s Malaya

Abstract

This paper discusses the creation and reuse potential of the dataset of .txt files of Chao Foon (Jiaofeng), a Chinese-language literary journal that was founded in November 1955 in colonial Malaya. This dataset from a ‘minor’ context of Malayan-Chinese (or Mahua) literature aims to broaden the study of Cold War modernism beyond Euro-American and French contexts. Scholars can use the dataset to generate embeddings and visualizations based on distributional methods.
