Raetia Prima in Long Late Antiquity (3rd–8th Century AD). A Georeferenced Dataset of All Archaeological Sites

Open Access
|Oct 2025

Abstract

The dataset comprises all archaeological sites (settlements, burials, and churches) from the period of Long Late Antiquity in the Late Roman province of Raetia Prima. Based on comprehensive literature research, it forms the foundation for investigations into transformation processes during the period between the end of the Roman Empire and the Carolingian realm.

The data are provided both as raw data (CSV, Excel) and as processed data, including maps (GeoPDF) and a site catalogue with references. Settlement dynamics are made visible through the implementation of the data in QGIS, for which the dataset is provided in GeoPackage format, including corresponding layer style files, categorised by site type.

The dataset can be used for in-depth studies of individual sites or site categories—serving both as a comprehensive literature catalogue and as a basis for mapping and visualising settlement dynamics.
