Workshop – Background
The Digital Bridge project is co-designing and deploying a digitally-enabled person-centred care transition model across two large hospital-based systems in southern Ontario. The project leverages virtual co-design methods to integrate two existing technology solutions developed in two different settings, to enable person-centred care transitions from hospital to home.
Workshop - Aims and Objectives
This workshop is intended to give delegates an introduction to applying and adopting virtual co-design methods in their own practice or research settings. The session will: 1) overview how common principles of co-design can be translated into a virtual environment; 2) identify opportunities, challenges and risks of applying these methods; 3) take delegates through a hands-on virtual example; and 4) discuss how these methods can be applied across different settings for a variety of design purposes.
Workshop - Target audience
This workshop is appropriate for managers and leaders seeking to engage in virtual co-design to develop or advance models of care in practice; for researchers/academics applying these methods as part of implementation studies; and for co-design participants (such as patients, families, and providers).
Workshop - Format
This 90-minute workshop session is broken into 3 sections, beginning with a 10-minute virtual ice-breaker similar to those commonly used in virtual co-design methods. After this ice-breaker the facilitators will spend 20 minutes to define the methodologies and discuss the advantages and risks of using it, drawing on examples from the Digital Bridge and other projects. The bulk of the session will be a group virtual co-design session where delegates will act as co-design participants, experiencing virtual co-design in action for about 45-minute. The final 15 minutes will bring delegates back together to reflect and share about their experiences.
Workshop - Key Learnings/Take away
Delegates will:
• Learn how foundational principles of co-design can be adapted to a virtual environment;
• Take away practical tools and approaches they can apply in practice or research settings;
• Understand critical issues and concerns (such as equity and access) that need to be considered when engaging in virtual co-design.
