Working Together Collaboration for Health Cover

Abstract

Collaboration is a response to complex health and social problems that no sector, organisation, group, or individual can resolve working alone. Although there have been significant successes, the promise of collaboration is not always fulfilled.

Integrated Care aims to deliver seamless unfragmented support for individuals with complex needs placing them at the centre of comprehensive wrap around services (NSW Ministry of Health 2018). Integrated care requires collaboration within the health sector (between patients and health professionals, and between professional groups within the sector. In addition, integrated care implies collaboration with sectors beyond the health sector – to co-design and sustain effective ways of working together. This means co-creating shared values and vision amongst all health and affiliated partners and being prepared to work together.

This workshop is intended to assist participants to expand their knowledge and awareness of actions that can increase the capacity of collaborations to have positive impacts on public policy, institutional structures and practices, environments and ultimately wellbeing outcomes for individual patients, communities and populations. Tensions are inherent in collaboration and there is ongoing need for discussion to learn from current research and experience of others to ensure sustainability.

Building on an earlier guide to ‘working together’ (Harris, Wise, et al. 1995), this workshop presents an updated conceptual framework together with the release of a new manuscript. The updated framework is based on a review of the literature, in-depth interviews with members of the Inner West Interagency Partnership and Planning Group (IWIPPG) in the Sydney Local Health District and other key stakeholders, and two consultative workshops.

The target audience for this workshop is health professionals, community health workers, consumer representatives and non-government organisations. The session structure will include the use of interactive presentations, group work, feedback, summary of findings and review of objectives.
