Striking a Balance between Conservation and Tourism Growth: A Research on the Management of Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka

Tourism is an important facet of the economic growth of Sri Lanka, which has been contributing to the earning of foreign exchange and generation of jobs. Some of the top attractions in the country include the cultural and heritage sites of the country, which have been recognized by UNESCO, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and Kandy, and are critical in forming the tourism identity of the country. The mushrooming tourism in these regions has, however, led to increasing issues regarding sustainability, conservation, and degradation of heritage. This essay will look into the correlation between heritage conservation and tourism development, with a special concern for how management can balance both the economic gains and the conservation needs. In this research, which employs qualitative research methods, such as interviews, field observations, and document analysis, the research assesses the effects of tourism development on the chosen cultural heritage sites. The results show that although tourism has benefited by creating economic opportunities, employment, and improving infrastructure, it has also caused related problems of over-visitation, unauthorized constructions, misinterpretation of cultural narratives, and poor management of sites. The study concludes that key strategies in managing the heritage tourism industry in Sri Lanka, involving community involvement and effective protection policies, are necessary to make the heritage tourism industry sustainable. It provides recommendations on how the cooperation between the Department of Archaeology, the Central Cultural Fund, and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority can be enhanced to preserve the cultural integrity of these locations as a heritage for future generations.
