Abstract

In the context of the global food crisis intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, the primary objective of this study is to examine the impact of the pandemic on food security in urban low-income households. The study focused on twenty families living in a high-rise residential complex in Maligawatta, Colombo, selected through a random sampling method using a lottery system. The study utilized both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, including event study techniques, surveys, and interviews, and analyzed the data using the SPSS software and thematic analysis methods.
While food security issues that emerged during the initial phase of the pandemic have returned to pre-pandemic levels, the research reveals that these households did not prioritize food security even before the pandemic. The study highlights that food security was not given sufficient attention in these communities prior to the pandemic.
