
Assessment of Drug Supply Chain Management Effectiveness in Selected Tertiary Care Hospitals in The Western Province of Sri Lanka
Abstract
Background: Access to essential medicines is crucial for effective healthcare delivery, particularly in tertiary care hospitals where complex medical cases are managed. However, challenges in the supply chain management of drugs persist, leading to shortages and inefficiencies in healthcare delivery. In Sri Lanka, despite substantial investments and regulatory frameworks, deficiencies in drug supply chain management have been observed, impacting the availability and quality of medications in hospitals.
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of drug supply chain management in selected tertiary care hospitals within the Western Province of Sri Lanka.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in selected tertiary care hospitals in the Western Province, utilizing purposive sampling. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires, document reviews, and observations of drug stores.
Results: The study revealed significant gaps in supply chain management practices in tertiary care hospitals. Factors such as inadequate training, poor inventory management, and substandard storage facilities were identified as contributors to inefficiencies. Despite efforts, none of the hospitals met the expected standards in drug availability or quality management.
Conclusion: This study highlighted areas for improvement such as drug availability and estimation accuracy, alongside successes in mitigating drug wastage and maintaining inventory. Despite limitations in existing literature, the study provided valuable insights into enhancing drug management practices. Urgent interventions are needed to address challenges and ensure uninterrupted access to essential medications, emphasizing the importance of targeted interventions in tertiary care settings.
