Deprescribing in older adults
Abstract
Polypharmacy, the concurrent use of multiple medications, is highly prevalent among the elderly and has been associated with various adverse outcomes such as cognitive impairment, falls, hospitalisations, and increased mortality. In this context, deprescribing plays a critical role. Deprescribing is the process of discontinuing harmful or no longer necessary medications, addressing the harms of inappropriate polypharmacy. This process requires shared decision-making between the prescriber and the patient. This article explores the approach, tools, and challenges associated with deprescribing. It also reviews findings from various trials on deprescribing in older adults, emphasising its growing importance in enhancing geriatric care.
