Impact of environmentally sustainable practices on guest revisit intention: A narrative review of the Maldives tourist sector

In emerging tourism-dependent economies, environmentally sustainable practices (ESPs) are essential for competitive advantage. However, evidence linking ESPs to revisit intention remains inconsistent. This study provides a narrative literature review of 40 studies published between 2013 and 2024 that were selected with a structured search and screening process to examine the role of ESPs in resort tourism in the Maldives. Using thematic synthesis, it explores effects on guest behaviour, focusing on the environmental dimension of the Triple Bottom Line. Findings suggest ESPs positively influence revisit intention when integrated into guest experiences. Guest-facing initiatives enhance emotional connection, while back-of-house practices have limited impact unless made visible. Service quality, destination image, and perceived value act as key mediators.
