Participatory Action Research (PAR): An Alternative Approach to Development Planning

Participatory Action Research (PAR) has emerged as a transformative methodology in development planning, aiming to empower marginalized communities through collaborative knowledge creation, capacity-building, and participatory decisionmaking. Rooted in critical pedagogy and social justice frameworks, PAR challenges traditional top-down approaches by fostering inclusivity, mutual learning, and context-specific solutions, prioritizing community agency and self-determination. This article explores the theoretical foundations, historical evolution, and practical applications of PAR, emphasizing its potential to address socio-economic inequalities, enhance participatory governance, and contribute to sustainable development. However, implementing PAR faces challenges such as ethical dilemmas, power imbalances, and resource limitations, necessitating strategic approaches for effective application.
