
Comparison of Interleukins in Parturients Undergoing Labour Analgesia with Combined Spinal Epidural versus Epidural
Abstract
Background: This study evaluates interleukins (ILs) as markers of stress response in parturients receiving combined spinal epidural (CSEA) vs. epidural analgesia during labour.
Methods: Forty ASA II parturients in early spontaneous labour were randomized into two groups (n=20 each): CSEA and epidural. IL-10, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-1β/IL-10 levels were measured before analgesia and at full cervical dilation.
Results: No significant changes in blood stress markers were observed between groups. IL-6 levels were unaffected by analgesia type, maternal or neonatal temperature. CSEA offered a quicker onset of analgesia and lower VAS scores.
Conclusion: Epidural and CSEA analgesia show similar stress marker profiles. CSEA offers faster pain relief, with comparable outcomes in pain scores, greater satisfaction, and better maternal-neonatal health.
