Abstract
The Svapnavāsavadatta, attributed to the ancient Indian playwright Bhāsa, is a monumental work in Sanskrit drama renowned for its narrative depth and artistic sophistication. This study delves into the didactic phrases interwoven throughout the play, aiming to uncover their pedagogical significance and cultural resonance. By examining these phrases, the research highlights how Bhāsa integrates moral, philosophical, and practical wisdom into the dialogue, transcending mere entertainment to serve as a vehicle for ethical instruction and societal reflection. The investigation identifies key didactic elements, categorizing them under themes such as duty (Dharma), governance, personal relationships, and the transient nature of life. The study further explores how these phrases reflect their time's socio-political and philosophical ethos, providing insights into the values and priorities of ancient Indian society. The study emphasizes Bhāsa’s unique ability to craft didactic expressions that resonate across cultural and temporal boundaries, affirming his role as a pioneer in merging artistic creativity with moral instruction. This analysis contributes to the broader understanding of Sanskrit drama as a medium of both aesthetic delight and intellectual engagement, underscoring the enduring relevance of Svapnavāsavadatta in contemporary discourse on literature and ethics.
