Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement in the New Education Policy (Nep) 2020: Challenges and Opportunities

India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes lifelong learning as a fundamental aspect of education, aimed at providing continuing education and skill development to people of all ages. The policy promotes the integration of formal, non-formal, and informal learning pathways into mainstream education, including vocational education. With India's literacy rate at 74.04%, the focus has shifted from literacy to adult education and lifelong learning. Online learning platforms have revolutionized education by offering a wide range of courses, including language proficiency and technical skills. Personalized learning experiences and microlearning modules are also gaining popularity, increasing retention rates. Thus, lifelong learning networks are expanding with a focus on soft skills training. Lifelong learning is a key component of NEP 2020, reflecting a holistic approach to education that includes all age groups and learning settings. However, challenges such as lack of information, budgetary constraints, educational inequality, institutional preparedness, learner characteristics and resistance to non-traditional teaching methods hinder its implementation emphasizing the need for specialized training programs. Going forward, significant efforts are needed to overcome existing barriers and promote a culture of continuous learning across all sectors of society. To overcome these challenges, NEP 2020 provides opportunities to expand lifelong learning through technology adoption, financial assistance and community engagement programs and activities. This report examined the various dimensions and implications of lifelong learning as defined in NEP 2020, such as its historical context, contemporary trends, issues, and mechanism for financial assistance. Further, the conclusions of the study highlight the importance of lifelong learning in the NEP 2020. The study concludes that community and financial support are crucial for promoting lifelong learning, and that technology can make educational resources more accessible.
