Reviving the Past with the Tools of The Future: Trench Warfare and Drone Technology in the Contemporary Battlespace of Eastern Ukraine

This study examines the revival of trench warfare and its intersection with drone technology in the Russia -Ukraine war from 2022 to 2025. It examines how drones have influenced the design, use and meaning of trenches during this war. Trench warfare is typically associated with history, but in Ukraine, it has reemerged as a tactical response to the evolving dangers of drones and precision firepower. Th is study adopts a qualitative case study design, and the content and thematic analysis were used for the data analysis. It relies on OSINT (Open-source intelligence) information like journal articles, books, defence reports, and credible media sources. The goal is to help understand why trench systems have been resurrected, how drones interact with them and what kind of lessons this case has for the future of military doctrine. The implications of the drone warfare have been systematically studied according to the context of the Russia-Ukraine war. The trenches are revived not as relics but as rational modifications to an environment where constant monitoring and long -distance attack render manoeuvring dangerous. Also, the function of trench has been restructured by drones, specifically reconnaissance, loitering, and FPV (First Person View) systems that have created perfectly altered levels of exposure, targeting, and attack against defensive networks. That has driven Ukrainian and Russian forces to create new types of concealment systems, counter-drone systems, and new solutions to manoeuvre, including motorcycles and tethered systems. Now it has become a spiral of advance and fallback, each iteration defined by new technologies and countermeasures. The Ukraine trench-drone junction is instructive for worldwide military doctrine. Futuristic wars may well have to achieve the right balance between mobility and survivability, with force protection, electronic warfare, counter-drone systems, etc, being as important as manoeuvre and firepower. This case demonstrates that modern warfare still centres on the notions of survivability and endurance even with the advanced technologies that dominate the modern warfare.
