Exploring the Job Demands and Resources of Sandwich Generation Female Employees in Sri Lanka
Abstract
The significant challenges faced by the Sandwich Generation have garnered considerable attention over the past few decades. However, the unique job demands and resources experienced specially by female employees within this demographic are rarely addressed. This study examines the work-related demands encountered by Sandwich Generation female employees due to their caregiving responsibilities and the resources drawn upon, using the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model. Data was gathered through fourteen semi structured interviews with Sandwich Generation female employees across various sectors. Data were analysed and interpreted using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that many female employees face high job demands while having limited job resources. Furthermore, the job demands associated with being part of the Sandwich Generation can be classified as job hindrances, as they impede personal growth, learning, and goal achievement while increasing stress levels. While previous research using the model has focused on the emotional demands of interactions with clients or colleagues, the current findings emphasize the gendered emotional burdens related to juggling caregiving responsibilities alongside work.
