Abstract

Studies on songs determine that modern lyrics take on a paradoxical form far from reality in their reconstruction of individual life. That is why the literature quality of song lyrics on social development has become a research- oriented issue in the modern world. The objective of the research is to study whether the lyrics portray the reality of the father’s role and the modern father’s role in social transformation. Social literary theory, gender theory and post-colonial theory were used for analysing data. Literature review and interviews were used as methodology under the qualitative research methodology. Sample of this research consists of lyrics of Sunil Sarath Perera, Yamuna Malini Perera and Rathna Sri Wijesinghe which were highly valued about this theme. Lyricists have tended to recreate the role of the man, the role of fatherhood in the traditional society in its conservative form as well as the modern challenges. The study revealed a minimal focus on the modern challenging role of the father and a shift away from the concept of lyricist leading more towards artistic and empirical status for more harmonious social image. The comparative study revealed that the representation of reality is based on the wholeness of one’s life consciousness and social outlook. The study traced that all three lyricists are concerned with the realistic portrayal of father’s role by focusing on the quality as well as the number of songs.
