Exploring the Challenges of Illegal Migration from Sri Lanka to Malaysia: A Social Work Perspective on Intervention Strategies

This research explores the multifaceted challenges surrounding the phenomenon of illegal migration from Sri Lanka to Malaysia, employing a social work lens to formulate effective intervention strategies. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to comprehensively investigate the complex dynamics associated with this migration. Qualitatively, the research conducts in-depth interviews with migrants and stakeholders to unveil the socio-economic, political, and cultural factors influencing migration decisions. The exploration aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the motivations and contextual factors driving individuals to engage in unauthorized migration. In the quantitative phase, survey data from a representative sample is analyzed to elucidate the prevalence and demographic patterns of illegal migration. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted social work interventions that address both individual and systemic challenges. This synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data highlights the interconnected nature of the challenges faced by migrants and emphasizes the importance of holistic intervention strategies. Moreover, the results contribute to a nuanced understanding of the diverse factors influencing migration, informing the development of comprehensive and context-specific interventions. This research contends that effective social work interventions should encompass advocacy, protective measures, and support systems. By assessing existing interventions in Malaysia, the study identifies gaps and proposes strategies for enhanced intervention, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between governments and non-governmental organizations.
