Managing Diverse Datasets to Ensure Bathymetric Data Accuracy in Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI)

Abstract

Any research study requires the data to be in a generic format, rather than tailored for a specific product or a limited user group. The path from data to information and to knowledge is well-known, and emphasizes the principle that data serves as the foundation of knowledge; validating and ensuring its reliability will enhance its intrinsic value. While the accuracy standards for bathymetric data in hydrographic surveys intended to ensure safe navigation are explicitly outlined in IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) standards based on area-specific descriptions, bathymetric data utilized within the Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) may not always be derived directly from systematic surveys. MSDI relies heavily on the accuracy of bathymetric data, which often vary in source, format, and uncertainty. These variations can compromise data reliability and hinder effective decision making. The lack of a user-friendly framework to asses and access the accuracy status of bathymetric data sets has been identified as a drawback, making it difficult for users to determine their suitability for various applications. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses, to establish robust accuracy levels for diverse data sources integrated into MSDI. Key IHO standards, including S-44 (Minimum Standards for Hydrographic Surveys), S-67 (Mariners’ Guide to Accuracy of Depth Information in Electronic Navigational Charts), and S-57 (Transfer Standards of Digital Hydrographic Data), were referenced, with accuracy levels classified into three main categories as; high, moderate and low. This classification enhances the reliability and quality of the final product for users, serving as a foundational pillar of MSDI and supporting its long-term sustainability.
