Abstract

This research offers a detailed functional and categorical analysis of particles in spoken Sinhala, emphasising their essential role in the language's syntax and semantics. Sinhala particles are non-inflecting elements that attach to nominal or verbal constituents, serving various communicative functions. Through authentic spoken data, the study identifies eight distinct categories of particles: case, predicative, highlighting, conjunctive, discourse, interrogative, quotative, and negative particles. The analysis demonstrates how these particles contribute significantly to the clarity, coherence, and expressiveness of spoken Sinhala. Despite their small size and lack of inflexion, particles play a crucial role in organising discourse, marking pragmatic nuances, and shaping meaning. This study fills a gap in Sinhala linguistics by providing comprehensive examples and categorisation based on real language use. The findings have important implications for linguistic theory, language teaching, and the development of natural language processing tools for Sinhala. Future research is recommended to explore particle usage across dialects, social contexts, and historical development.
