Abstract
Tabla manufacturing has been practiced for more than five decades in the areas of Alawala, Nittambuwa, and Veyangoda, which historically belong to the Siyane Korale region of Sri Lanka. Despite this long-standing tradition, systematic academic investigation into the specific techniques and acoustical principles underlying local tabla tonal production remains limited. The central research problem of this study is to identify and critically analyze the specialized craftsmanship, material selection, and construction methodologies that contribute to high-quality tonal production within the indigenous Sri Lankan tabla manufacturing tradition.The primary objective of the research is twofold: first, to examine established Indian tabla-making techniques—including contemporary innovations and emerging trends in tonal optimization—and second, to evaluate their applicability within the local Sri Lankan context. Particular attention is given to identifying structural and acoustical differences between locally produced tablas and those manufactured in renowned Indian centers such as Varanasi (Benares), Kolkata, Pune, and Lucknow, whose products are widely regarded for superior tonal clarity, harmonic balance, and durability. The increasing importation of high-quality Indian tablas presents a short-term competitive challenge to Sri Lankan manufacturers, while long-term issues include limited access to premium raw materials, insufficient technological updating, and the need for alternative material experimentation.A review of existing literature reveals that although several studies and manuals address general aspects of tabla construction, detailed analyses focusing specifically on tonal production mechanisms and the distinct practices of Siyane Korale craftsmen are scarce.
Therefore, this study adopts a qualitative research methodology, employing field observations, artisan interviews, and comparative organological analysis to document indigenous knowledge systems and assess production processes. By introducing contemporary Indian technical advancements, identifying structural weaknesses in local manufacturing, and proposing contextually viable material alternatives, this research aims to enhance production standards and acoustic quality in Sri Lankan tabla craftsmanship. Ultimately, the study seeks not only to elevate the technical level of local manufacturing but also to contribute to the socio-economic sustainability of tabla makers by supporting the development of high-quality instruments for the Sri Lankan musical community.
