Acute kidney injury in Sri Lanka: A comprehensive approach to recognition, management, and prevention
Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) poses a significant health challenge in Sri Lanka, affecting both community and hospitalised populations with distinct epidemiological patterns. This review provides evidence-based guidance on recognising, managing, and preventing AKI, emphasising the unique disease patterns and resource considerations relevant to local practice. Since community-acquired causes account for 80% of AKI cases in low- and middle-income countries, understanding tropical infections, environmental toxins, and socioeconomic factors is crucial for effective management.
