
Impact of Capability Maturity Model Integration on Performance of Information System Projects in Western Province of Sri Lanka
Abstract
This study attempts to examine the impact of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) levels on the performance of software projects in western province of Sri Lanka to fill the lack of empirical gap in the literature. A quantitative approach was adopted since the study tests hypotheses based on the positivist approach. Data were collected from eighty-two software development firms via a self-administered questionnaire and inferential analysis was performed for data analysis using the multiple regression and One-way Anova. Results indicate that CMMI levels do have different impacts on software project performance and higher CMMI levels are highly associated with improving software project performance in Sri Lanka. Specifically, CMMI level III (managed) indicates the highest impact than CMMI levels II (defined) and IV (quantitatively managed). Results imply that software process activities are documented, standardized, and integrated into a standard software process for developing, testing, and maintaining the application for projects across the organization. The present study strengthened empirical findings in developing economies and provides practical implications for the diverse stakeholders to uplift CMMI levels to enhance the quality, efficiency, and productivity of software projects in Sri Lanka. Moreover, since the study only focused on the software development organizations in western province of Sri Lanka, further studies would strengthen the generalizability of the findings.
