Abstract

Project management is essential for success in dynamic sectors such as software development. This research investigates the adoption of Agile project management techniques (PMMs) by Sri Lankan software start-ups, with an emphasis on identifying major contributing variables, analysing implementation obstacles, and recommending improvement solutions. Data was acquired using a multiple case study technique, with seven senior executives from various businesses participating in semi-structured interviews. Key elements identified through thematic analysis were team communication, market needs, consumer expectations, industry standards, and external pressures. The highlighted challenges include resource limits, cultural and organisational opposition, strict industrial standards, and uncertainty during Agile deployment. The research suggests practical answers such as obtaining external guidance, striking a balance between stability and flexibility, dealing with cultural opposition, and maximising resource allocation. These results are useful for start-ups looking to improve project management methods, as well as politicians looking to encourage innovation in the software industry. This study fills a significant gap in the project management literature by investigating Agile PMM adoption in Sri Lanka's distinct socio-cultural and economic settings. The insights provided are critical for implementing good project management methods, increasing agility, and gaining long-term competitive advantages.
