
Evaluating the quality of walkability in pedestrian environments in Tsukuba, Japan using the pedestrian environmental quality index (PEQI)
Abstract
As global urbanization accelerates, enhancing urban liveability becomes increasingly important, with walkability being a crucial dimension. This study evaluates the current state of walkability in Tsukuba City, Japan, using the Pedestrian Environmental Quality Index (PEQI). Tsukuba City, despite its innovative planning and efficient public transportation, faces increased car dependency and rapid urban development, necessitating a reassessment of its pedestrian infrastructure. By analysing factors such as intersection safety, vehicular traffic, sidewalks, land use, safety and aesthetic qualities and perceived walkability, this research aims to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation of Tsukuba City's pedestrian environment. The findings reveal that most intersections and segments assessed offer reasonable conditions, though there is substantial room for improvement. The findings are intended to inform urban planning practices, enhance public health, promote environmental sustainability, and provide economic benefits. This comprehensive assessment offers a model for similar analyses in other urban contexts.
