Abstract

This study investigated the preventive and therapeutic effects of Adansonia digitata on organ weights and histological changes following CCl₄-induced toxicity in Wistar rats. Thirty-five Wistar rats were randomly allocated into seven groups (n = 5 per group). The experimental design included a positive control group, two negative control groups (preventive and therapeutic), and four treatment groups receiving low (250 mg/kg) or high (500 mg/kg) doses of A. digitata in preventive and therapeutic regimens. Pre-treatment and post-treatment were administered according to the experimental protocol. At the end of the treatment period, the animals were sacrificed, organ weights were recorded, and liver, kidney, brain, and testicular tissues were processed for histological examination. Treatment with A. digitata increased body weight in both preventive and therapeutic groups and increased testicular weight at the low dose, while a non-significant decrease in kidney weight was observed. A significant increase in liver and brain weights was also recorded. Histological analysis demonstrated that A. digitata preserved the normal cytoarchitecture of the liver, kidney, brain, and testes following CCl₄-induced toxicity. These findings suggest that A. digitata exerts protective effects against CCl₄-induced tissue damage, supporting its potential as a natural therapeutic agent for mitigating chemically induced organ toxicity.
