Variation of Mg, S, K and Ca contents in individual sea-salt particles

Abstract

Elemental composition of individual sea-salt particles collected over the Pacific Ocean was examined by an electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer. We found a significant variation of Mg, S, K and Ca contents. Moreover, the weight ratio of S/Na was well correlated with those of Mg/Na, K/Na and Ca/Na. This property can be explained by the fractionary recrystallization within evaporating drops followed by shattering.
