Abstract

The calibration of carbon cycle models by using techniques of constrained inversion is described. These techniques provide a systematic means of assessing the uncertainties in the calibration. The specific calibration technique is analysed in terms of the requirements of carbon cycle studies, and the relation to other constrained inversion formalisms is discussed. As an example of the technique, a linearized version of the box-diffusion model is calibrated.
