Abstract

The lifetime of atmospheric methyl chloroform (CH₃CCl₃) is estimated to be about 6 (±1.5) years based on extensive measurements taken over the past seven years at remote locations of the world, ranging from inside the Arctic Circle to the South Pole. The average level of tropospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH) deduced from the lifetime of CH₃CCl₃ is about 8 × 10⁵ molecules/cm³, but this value is uncertain by up to ±75 %.
