Abstract

In 1949, Carl-Gustaf Rossby initiated the publication of Tellus. He visualized a wide interdisciplinaryforum for reseachers in the geophysical sciences. Since then, a considerable development has takenplace, resulting in there no longer being journals covering the whole area of geophysics. Most journalstend to specialize in certain areas. During the 1960s and 1970s, Tellus gradually moved towardsconcentrating on articles covering atmospheric and oceanic sciences. Other geophysical disciplineseventually transferred to other journals. As a result of the tendency to concentrate on certain specializedareas, two parallel series of Tellus were established in 1983, Tellus A which publishes articles inDynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, and Tellus B devoted to Chemical and Physical Meteorology.
