Abstract
Some computations are presented in order to estimate the relative importance of different factors for the generation of the quasi-stationary perturbations in the westerlies, such as the effect of the large mountain barriers, the heat exchange with the surface of the earth and surface friction. For that purpose the vorticity advection of the mean field of motion has been computed. It is concluded that the three factors mentioned seem to be of the same order of magnitude.
