Abstract

Fronts moving along steep mountain ridges may show the characteristics of a ducted gravity current. Moreover, an intensification of the cross-frontal temperature gradient and a sudden increase of the speed of propagation has been observed during the formation of such a ducted front. We propose a mechanism for this type of frontogenesis and demonstrate its effectivity by running numerical experiments with a multi-layer model.
