
Forecasting applications of radar-derived precipitation echo velocities in the vicinity of polar lows

Abstract
Precipitation data derived from radar are shown to provide an operationally useful indication of the speed and direction of movement of two cyclonic vortices. For the particular kind of event studied, it is shown that by following the track of individual convection cells, a good indication of the strength of the gusts in exposed locations can be obtained.
