Abstract

The paper describes an experiment in which a barotropic vortex is heated either by convection connected to the convergence of water vapour in the Ekman layer, or by surface fluxes proportional to the surface wind speed. Intensification is achieved both ways. In the former case, the inner part of the vortex intensifies while in the latter case, the circulation is concentrated in a ring-shaped area. An area of sinking motion in the center may lead to formation of an “eye”
