Roughness elements of the sea surface—their spectral composition

Abstract

The wind stress is considered to consist of momentum flux to aqueous flows and direct transfer to long waves. At various wind velocities, compositions of the wind stress and spectral contributions of wave components to each portion are presented. The rôle of the Charnock expression is further clarified, and all previous proposals relating roughness elements to waves are critically reviewed.
