
500 mb geopotential height spectral peaks in the 1- to 5-week range
Abstract
Spectral peaks in the range of 1 to 5 weeks are computed from the empirical orthogonal functions of the 500 mb geopotential height, 1946–79. The maximum entropy method is employed. The problems of the method are discussed. A number of peaks are found. Tentative explanations in terms of various Rossby modes may be offered as follows: 16, 5 and 4.5-4 day peaks as symmetric modes, 9 and 7 day peaks as antisymmetric modes and the 2.5 day peak as a Rossby-gravity mode. No explanation for 3, 6, 12 and approximately 30-day peaks are proposed. The 30-day peak is often the most dominant peak in the spectra in which it occurs.
