Abstract
In 1980 Dr. Holger Crafoord and Mrs. Anna-Greta Crafoord provided funds to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for the award of a major scientific prize. Dr. Crafoord was the former director of the Gambro Company, which is engaged in the development and manufacture of scientific, particularly medical, instruments and equipment. It was prescribed that the prize should be awarded annually and consecutively within the fields of mathematics and astronomy, geosciences, biosciences (especially ecology), and polyarthritis.
